Symbolism

Swastikas, US flags and Olympic torches. Crucifixes and pictures of Allah. All symbols.

They represent love, devotion, hatred or death and people get so worked up about them. yet they are just... symbols, inanimate representations.

This Olympic torch stuff is really annoying the crap out of me. It is a bloody torch for fuck's sake! the media in all forms have humanised the thing.

"The torch was whisked away to safety overnight"

"The torch was welcomed to Australia by..."

and so on.

I'm just waiting for the torch to develop a bloody headache one day soon and decide not to go out jogging.....

This whole Olympic thing is one big yawn to me. Some of the sports are enjoyable but not that many.

As for Olympic ideals... They clearly died for the majority of people when professionalism took over.

Furthermore, I think every four years is far too often to have to endure the opening and closing ceremonies and why can't we put in place a total news embargo on the Olympics until say a week before the games start?

Miserable killjoy ain't I?

;-)

Very good point Lisa. They've all been sitting back all this time and NOW decide to make a big noise. Nothing has changed for years. Tibet has been a part of the Chinese empire since before Adam(Goodes) was a lad!

Thank God it's not just me then!

Sometimes you almost feel as if you're a lone voice and then you realise that your LJ friends are a little bit more discerning than the run of the mill crowd.

I'm with you; they should do away with this torch fiasco. Be interesting to see how much today's 'torch run' through Canberra cost in terms of security, upcoming court appearances, re-ignition of tension between Chinese & Tibetans within Australia etc. At one stage, AFP officers protecting the runners, were jostling with Chinese security personnel protecting the torch. When the security personnel start shoving and pushing each other, it's time to blow the torch out and simply say "Fuck this! Let's go home".

""It is a bloody torch for fuck's sake!""

My sentiment exactly.

The OG will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. It really ought to be cancelled this time round.

But then what would a pure commoner such as myself, know about the ways of the world?
