Spelling Lessons

There are two ways to spell the word 'crap'. 'C-R-A-P' is one way and 'B-A-B-E-L' is another. I watched this movie last night and it lost not only me, but also the company of three other people who saw it with me. I fail to see why it is being hailed as a possible Oscar winner and I am surprised that it could be nominated for anything other than the year's most 'must not see' film.

I think the film is meant to be themed about the difficulty of communication across cultural barriers and it seems to have a sub-theme about American influence and power around the world. It has some interesting and plausible characterisations of Mexicans, Moroccans and Japanese but that was it. it just doesn't grab you. Well, not these viewers anyway. We didn't knock the movie as we sat there watching it and in fact, we sat through without comment. We happened to share our opinions at the conclusion of the showing and we were unanimously disappointed by it.

The movie just doesn't get any message across. It doesn't leave you feeling that it has enriched your understanding of anything. It gives you no new spin on any of your beliefs. It is mildly entertaining and nothing else.

If you've seen it, what did you think? If not, have I put you off?  ;-)

Go Back - Jack Black !
We went to the movies the other night and finally caught up with Casino Royale. It was entertaining enough and I don't think the new Bond did a bad job altogether.

While at the flicks I saw for the second time, a preview of a movie starring the actor Jack Black in a character called 'Tenacious D'. The whole of the preview consisted of Jack Black singing along to a street minstrel's rendition of a Mozart tune while uttering the word 'fuck' at every possible opportunity. Now I am no prude, but I think that I am a fair judge of what is clever, what is funny and what is neither.

This is neither.

It may seem strange, but I really find it offensive. It is an overdose of vulgarity forced upon me while I am at the theatre to watch a movie in which such language plays no part whatsoever. It isn't funny either and it certainly is not witty. I could belt out the moronic words to such a tune in about 10 minutes flat.

I thought I had not seen this guy in movies before - only in movie trailers (can you make a living from appearing in movie trailers?) but on checking his list of movies, he has a few big name movies under his belt, mainly as a supporting actor. I think he comes out of the 'Saturday Night Live' stable of 'comedians.

There are many great comics to have come from that more humble beginning, but if this is the type of no-talent being produced these days then all I can say is "roll on - Sunday morning!"

Incidentally, it was the only scene from the movie that is shown in the promo so I think it speaks volumes about the rest of it.
